Micro Moths of the Teme Valley

The term "Micro Moth" is a somewhat generic collective for the 'smaller' moths we have in the UK. Taxonomically they are numbered from 1 through to 1524. Within this range, there are a few 'honorary Macro' moths...which fit better with the larger Macro's in status. This page is dedicated to those micro moths, which typically (there are a few exceptions) have a wing span of less than 20mm...and often, less than 10mm.
All micro moths with a 'header' and shown here have been trapped at Birchfield, the main constant effort trapping site at Upper Rochford in the Teme Valley, Worcs, (although a photograph has not always been taken!!) ; an 18 acre smallholding with a variety of specific and specialise habitats, all on one site.
Those photographs marked with a [* xxxxx] and which are shown at the end, have not been trapped at the main site, but have been trapped at other locations as specified, from within the Teme Valley area. These are included for interest but please note these are out of taxonomic sequence.
This list below details the micro list for the main site for the period as at 1st January 2011.
In some instances, many Micro moths are difficult to identify owing to extreme similarity between species. In these cases, very often, the only way of proving a species is present, is by dissection (often termed 'Gen Det' ). This raises all sorts of questions, not least one of morality. Should a moth be killed to confirm its indentity? There is no right or wrong answer.
What is clear, is that in order to protect a species, it is first necessary to determine its presence. In so doing, habitat can be studied and protected with the aim of long term survival of that species in an area. Its a case of, you can only protect a species if you first know about it.
The dissections carried out therefore, are undertaken on a need to know basis. Once a species has been proven present, further dissections of this species are limited and future records are often recorded as 'Agg' - Aggregate, indicating that the moth trapped is one of similar group of species known to be present.
