How To Encourage Birds In To Your Area
All birds require a source of food and water to live. With time, they can be encouraged into an area which provides them with these basic needs providing it is seen as a safe environment, free from predators.
Like most of us, birds too have their favourite foods, and knowing what foods what birds prefer, can greatly increase your chances of seeing them.
Here are just a few basic bird foods, and the species that they are likely to attract.
Peanuts: Great Tits, Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Nut Hatch, Long Tailed Tits
'Seeds': Green Finch, Chaffinch, Willow Tits, Sparrows, Dunnock
Niger Seeds or Teasle seeds : Gold Finch, Willow Tits.
Fat Balls : Great Tits, Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Nut Hatch, Long Tailed Tits
Meal Worms : Robins, Sparrows, Dunnock, All types of Tits, Blackbirds, Thrushes
You can even plant flowers and shrubs, or leave areas of your garden, to nature, to increase you likelihood of seeing birds.
Thistles and their seeds are a favourite of Gold Finch.
Holly berries attract Blackbirds, Thrushes, Redwing, Fieldfare and if you are really fortunate, Waxwing.
Hawthorn attracts many small birds as it acts as a secure roost.
